Functional Physio Adapting to Telehealth
The spread of Covid-19 has drastically changed the landscape of our nation. From the way we interact, get supplies, socialise and access healthcare. Maintaining our health, including our mental wellbeing has never been more important. This crisis has highlighted the detrimental consequences of having multiple co-morbidities such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure or cholesterol.
The response to Covid-19
Our immediate circumstances have resulted in many allied health facilities ceasing face to face consultations and adopting telehealth solutions. This is a great way to boost accountability, retain a sense of community engagement and continue with your treatment routine.
In the long term, once the current health crisis has passed, perhaps greater emphasis will be placed on lifestyle changes to help minimise the risk and severity of having or developing comorbidities. Our allied health workforce can be better utilised to address this across the country, particularly in remote areas via telehealth.
What can be treated via telehealth?
Communication and visual assessment of your movement quality is at the heart of all effective physiotherapy intervention. Therefore there is little restriction to our usual scope of practise using telehealth. Some key areas include;
-Ergonomic assessment of your work space set up at home or in the office
-musculoskeletal pain
-injury rehabilitation ranging from sprained ankles to post surgical care
-establish exercise and mobility strategies to prevent pain, improve wellbeing and improve physical performance
-work on gross motor skills for children and teenagers
Getting started with your Telehealth appointment
We will send a confirmation email with the details of your appointment and a link for Zoom. Zoom allows us to talk and see each other to complete a thorough assessment. Don’t worry, following the link is easy and you do not need an iphone or be tech savy to complete this process!
After your consultation you will receive an email taking you to Physiapp. You will find all your exercises here in an easy to follow day by day layout with video and written instructions. This app allows tracking of your progress or adjustments to your programme. You can also track your pain levels or ask questions through this app.
Follow ups are conducted as above, with modifications to your program automatically updating in Physiapp.
