What to expect at your physio appointment
So you’ve made your first physiotherapy appointment but you have absolutely no idea what to expect. What will happen during the appointment? What should you wear to your physio appointment? Don’t worry, these are all very common concerns.
The Initial Consultation
In your first session with the physiotherapist, you will go through an initial assessment. This involves talking about how you sustained the injury and the level of pain you are experiencing. You will also discuss how active you are in general.
Your physio will also need to examine your body through observation and manipulation of the area.
You may be surprised to hear that the Functional Physio QLD treatment room is actually located within a gym.
The reason for partnering with a gym is that it has a fully equipped weights area. This means that the physio can easily conduct rehab, prehab or mobility sessions using the existing equipment and space.
The private treatment room also allows your physiotherapist to perform targeted massage.
Stick to Activewear or Sports Clothes During Your Physio Sessions
The first rule of thumb when it comes to deciding what to wear to your physio appointment, is you must be comfortable.
Secondly, your physiotherapist must be able to properly assess and treat the body without being hindered by clothing.
Thirdly, be prepared to sweat! In fact, a physiotherapy appointment can actually be as vigorous as a personal training session!
So, dress as if you were going to the gym or to an exercise class.
Choose Clothes to Suit Your Treatment
There is no point in wearing leggings if your physio needs to examine the muscles and joints around your knee. So shorts or loose pants that can be rolled up are perfect for lower-leg complaints.
Put on a sleeveless tank top or loose T-shirt if you have shoulder issues.
Definitely wear sneakers as you will most likely be required to perform exercises. Sports shoes are easy to put on and take off. Dress shoes, sandals or high heels are not appropriate.
One of the most important things to remember is to wear underwear that you don’t mind being seen and treated in. Swimwear also works.
And lastly, if you are coming in from work, pack a bag of activewear and a spare change of clothes.
